Officers with the Nassau County Police Department say they received a report from
a witness who observed an erratic driver on Saturday, Oct. 5 around 11:35 p.m.
The witness stated that the vehicle, described as a silver-colored pickup truck with New York registration, was being driven erratically on Merrick Road between Amityville and Massapequa, police say.
Officers located the vehicle in question and identified the operator as Karl Pichler, 49, of Massapequa, police say.
Further investigation revealed that there were five passengers in the vehicle; two adults ages 20 and 37 and three children ages eight, eight and nine, police say.
The children were released to family members at the scene, and no injuries were reported, according to police.
Pichler was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), one count of DWI and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday, Oct. 6 at First District Court in Hempstead.
